1) Improve the Standard dairy farming in Sri Lanka
2) Providing the space for good quality, high genetic value dairy heifers
Milk production in Sri Lanka has been a traditional industry which has survived thousands of years, playing a key role in infant feeding and alleviating nutritional poverty in all age groups. The dairy sector is important due to the extensive employment opportunities the industry offers and the potential in contributing to the economy of the country.During last two decades as a result of the war situation in the country, the milk production drastically decreased and had to depend on imported dairy commodities at a greater extent.
The domestic milk production only constitutes about 40 percent of the requirement and the rest is imported. The import bill on dairy commodities is around 37 billion rupees or approximately 300 Million USD. The government attention is most focused on the dairy sub sector; to develop this sector into a ‘local industry’. The government policy on dairy development is aimed to increase milk production to make the country self-sufficient from milk by the year 2015/2016. Priority is therefore given for the dairy development in public sector investment programmers and several incentives offered to the private sector to engage in dairy sector.
World market prices for milk powders have increased dramatically over the past few years.
Energizing the local dairy sector would solve the problems aroused due to high prices of dairy products imported from other countries. .
It is expected that the milk production and the consumption of fresh milk by Sri Lankans will increase significantly as a result of this project within the next few years.
