Introduction

Milk production in Sri Lanka has been a cornerstone of nutrition for centuries, vital for infant feeding and combating nutritional poverty across all age groups. The dairy sector contributes significantly to employment and economic growth. However, domestic milk production currently meets only 40% of demand, with the remainder imported, costing approximately 37 billion rupees (~300 million USD).

Government initiatives prioritize developing the local dairy industry to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production. Boosting domestic production will reduce dependency on imports and address rising global milk powder prices, creating opportunities for both public and private sector investments. This project anticipates a significant increase in milk production and consumption of fresh milk by Sri Lankans over the next few years.
